Limited Edition Watercolor and Intaglio Etching

In the Mist features Motif Number 1, the iconic red fishing shack on Bradley Wharf in the harbor of Rockport, Massachusetts. Built in the 1840s, Motif Number 1 became a popular subject for the town’s burgeoning artist community. It was once the most often painted building in America. While the original fisherman's shack was destroyed in a 1978 blizzard, an exact replica occupies the same spot on a stone wharf that juts out into the water. It remains a symbol of New England maritime life and beckons to artists everywhere. In the foreground, three fishing boats quietly bear witness to this cultural landmark. A calm mist covers the harbor in early morning, but as the town wakes, the din of village life can be heard from across the water.

In the Mist is a limited edition watercolor and etching. It was created by drawing with a needle on a copper plate coated with an acid resistant ground, thus exposing copper. Using line etching and aquatint techniques, the copper plate is etched with acid. After hand inking and wiping, an etching press is used to emboss the image into a sheet of damp paper. Every print of In the Mist is individually inked, printed, and when dry, hand painted with watercolor.
