Limited Edition Watercolor and Intaglio Etching

May Morning depicts an idyllic scene of a white clapboard farmhouse with an attached ell and barn, like the ones found all over rural New England. A long, winding dirt road entices the viewer to enter the open gate of a spit rail fence, past blue-violet flowers blossoming at the foot of a large beech tree, and to a verdant pasture beyond. Cherry trees bloom, forsythia bushes burst with bright yellow flowers, and small green buds on the beech trees unfold. All these signs herald the long awaited arrival of spring.

May Morning was created by drawing with a needle on a copper plate coated with an acid resistant ground, thus exposing copper. Using line etching and aquatint techniques, the copper plate is etched with acid. After hand inking and wiping, an etching press is used to emboss the image into a sheet of damp paper. Every print of May Morning is individually inked, printed, and when dry, hand painted with watercolor.

Limited Edition Watercolor and Intaglio Etching

Mailboxes depicts six mailboxes lining the roadside by a New England farm. Several of their tiny bright red flags stand at attention, patiently awaiting pickup. The narrow road forks around the mailboxes, and a granite stone wall separates the country road from the fields and verdant pastures on the other side. It is early spring, and the bare branches of maple trees are just beginning to show budding leaves. In the distance stands a grey cedar shake saltbox farmhouse and beyond that, the rolling hills of New England. When deciding how to watercolor this etching, I found the interplay of light, shade and the many shades of green interesting to explore. I hope that you too will be captivated by this dance of shadows, light and color.
