Lilacs were one of the first plants brought by early settlers to North America, which is perhaps why they seem so fitting alongside traditional New England homes. Their soft lavender hues blend perfectly with the patterns of cool shadows on white walls and picket fences and compliment the lush greens of late spring and early summer. There were lilac bushes in the backyard of the home where I spent my childhood and for me the fragrance of lilacs brings back fond memories.
